The Second District comprises Virginia’s largest and fastest growing city, Virginia Beach (447,021 population), Northampton and Accomack counties, as well as substantial portions of Norfolk, Hampton, and Newport News.
It is home to the world’s largest naval base, the NASA Wallops space launch facility of increasing importance, the East Coast’s deepest natural port and most important coal trans-shipment facility, and well as numerous billion-plus American and international corporations. Tourism associated with recreational use of its beachfront and conferences held at the many large hotels in the district also accounts for substantial revenues – about $400 million in 2013 hotel revenues alone.
The district’s population is 652,514; women make up over 50% of the population; and minorities 33%, predominantly African Americans (22%). Nearly 92% of the district’s constituents hold high school or equivalent diplomas. A further 30% hold four-year college degrees, and an additional 11% hold masters or doctorate degrees. Average income in the district is $56,952.
The military in the district also provides valuable training that has provided a well-trained veteran workforce and indeed the district is home to retired veterans and military personnel. In sum: an important national hub of commercial and military enterprise.
